MEANING OF THE NAME FLUGSAND
Flugsand = ‘flying sand’
light and small sand that is easily blown away and deposited by the wind.
flug = flight, flying.
Sand = sand
Synonyms: bims (German), bimskies (German).
pumice, pumice, pumice dust, volcanic pumice.

cover sand, drift sand, drifting sand.
Incorrect: flugsand.

WHAT IS FLUGSAND?
Flugsand is also called Bimssand (bims sand).
Flugsand are the fine Bims grains (the size is smaller than 8 mm).
Flugsand consists of loose light fine grains (pebbles) that are porous.
Flugsand has a low density because it contains many cavities with air.
Flugsand consists mainly of volcanic glass.
porous = permeable, permeable, with openings (pores).
porosity = amount of pores (openings) in a material.

COMPOSITION OF FLUGSAND (GENERAL)
The composition of Flugsand can change.
Not every site and quarry contain the same composition of Flugsand.
Sometimes Flugsand contains a lot of sand.

COMPOSITION OF OUR FLUGSAND (1 - 4 mm)
Our Flugsand contains:
-- small light chunks of white bims sand.
-- small heavier pieces of volcanic black bims sand.

PROPERTIES OF OUR FLUGSAND
Weight: 1355 grams per litre.
So our Flugsand is heavier than our Bims, because it also contains small black bims stones.

APPLICATIONS OF OUR FLUGSAND IN PLANTS
Flugsand (1 - 4 mm) is a good type of soil to grow small plants and seedlings in.
The openings between the small lumps allow the roots of small plants to grow easily.
The Flugsand itself retains moisture with nutrients dissolved in it.
Our Flugsand thus contains small white bims grains (1 - 4 mm), and small black bims pieces (1-4 mm).
Our Flugsand (1 - 4 mm) can be used as:
1. Substrate that dries out faster
Flugsand pebbles retain moisture, but less than organic potting soils.
As a result, Flugsand dries out faster.
Soil mixed with Flugsand also dries out faster.
2. Addition to your potting soil
Your soil mixture dries out faster with the addition of our Flugsand.
3. Coating the soil
Due to its higher weight than Bims, our Flugsand is better to use as a covering layer on top of a pot, tray or tub.
4. Using the smallest pieces of Flugsand (1 to 2 mm diameter)
These smaller stones hold the most water between them.
They therefore dry out the slowest.
The smallest Flugsand grains can be used as:
1. supplement to soil mixtures.
2. complete soil mixture for small plants.
3. seedling soil.
5. Using the larger Flugsand pellets (2 to 4 mm diameter)
These less small lumps of Flugsand hold less water between the pebbles.
They therefore dry out faster than the smallest grains of 1 - 2 mm diameter.

These larger Flugsand grains are useful as:
1. supplement to soil mixtures.
2. complete soil mixture for small plants (cacti, succulents, sown plants).

1. Size of Flugsand pellets and size of Ash flower
Small Ash flowers can also use the smaller Flugsand grains up to about 1 to 4 mm.

ALTERNATIVES TO OUR FLUGSAND
If you want slightly larger pieces of flugsand, you can use our bims (1 - 8 mm).
Our Bims (1 - 8 mm) contains 95% small chunks, and only 5% chunks above 6 mm in diameter.
Separating flugsand or bims
1. Shake a container of bims (1-8 mm), bringing the large chunks to the top of the container.
Scoop out the top layer with the larger grains (5%).
You will then be left with the smaller grains.
2. Sieve the Flugsand using a sieve with 4 or 5 or 6 mm holes.
The bims passing through the sieve are the smaller grains.
