Names
Scientific name: Echinopsis lageniformis forma quadricostata.
Old scientific name: Trichocereus bridgesii forma quadricostatus.

Synonyms
= Cactus of the four winds (Dutch name).
= ‘Cactus of the four winds’ in English.
= Cactus del cuatro vientos (Spanish vernacular name). 

Folk names
= Bolivian Torch with four ribs (English folk name).
= Achuma Cactus (= Huachuma Cactus) with four ribs.
= Huachuma Cactus with four ribs (folk name in Bolivia).

INTRODUCTION

Special shape !
This particular form of the Bolivian Torch Cactus has only four ribs !
And is therefore called ‘Cactus of the four winds’ by the Shamans in South America.

Ribs on the Bolivian Torch Cactus
Normally, a Bolivian Torch (=Echinopsis lageniformis) has 5 to 6 ribs.
But sometimes a Bolivian Torch makes only four (4) ribs.
The Echinopsis lageniformis has 4-ribs more often than the other mind-altering Trichocereus species.
A San Pedro Cactus has more ribs, usually around 5 to 8 (or 9) ribs.

Use by Curanderos in rituals
Four-ribbed Bolivian Torch Cacti are considered highly magical and sacred.
Because each rib on the Cactus points to a wind direction.

Special supernatural powers are attributed to these 4-ribbed Cacti.
Indigenous Curanderos (Shamans) of South America use these 4-ribbed Cacti in healing ceremonies and rituals.

Inca Empire: Land of the four quarters
The ancient Inca Empire (until 1600 AD , but before Spanish rule) had the name: Tahuantisuyu,
which in the Quechua language means: Land of the four quarters (regions).
The Inca empire was divided into four parts.

The four winds were apparently very important in ancient Peruvian society.

GROWTH OF THE BOLIVIAN TORCH - CACTUS OF THE FOUR CARDINAL POINTS

Additional rib ?
The 4-ribbed Echinopsis lageniformis Cactus can later add an extra rib.
So this cactus then has 5 ribs at the top and 4 at the bottom.
In our nursery, this rarely happens.
We therefore have this Trichocereus bridgesii Cactus with four ribs for sale up to 25 or 30 cm in length.

Growth rate
Echinopsis lageniformis is the fastest growing Mescaline Cactus species !
This particular form of Echinopsis lageniformis grows as fast as the normal Echinopsis lageniformis with 5 or 6 ribs.

Mescaline content
The Mescaline content of the normal Echinopsis lageniformis with five ribs and this form with four ribs is the same.
According to studies and bioassays, the Mescaline concentration is about the same as in the San Pedro Cactus.

Same names for the Bolivian Torch Cactus (Achuma Cactus) and the San Pedro Cactus
Indigenous Indians in Bolivia call Echinopsis lageniformis and Trichocereus pachanoi both:
1. Achuma.
2. Huachuma.
3. San Pedro.
Apparently, Indians do not distinguish between the two botanically distinct Cactus species.

Echinopsis lageniformis is among the fastest growing Mescaline Cacti !

DIMENSIONS
The dimensions given are minimum dimensions.
So a cutting of 7+ cm means a length of at least 7 cm.

CUTTING OR ROOTED CACTUS
Our Mescaline Cacti (Peyote Cactus, San Pedro Cactus, Peruvian Torch Cactus) are offered as :

1. STEK = Thick strong cuttings without roots (CUTTINGS).
To pot up yourself, or to eat ..... !
A cutting makes roots after a few weeks, after which the rooted Mescaline Cactus continues to grow. 

Cuttings of Trichocereus Cactus species 
-- are up to about 15 cm in length much thicker, heavier and stronger than sown Mescaline Cacti (seedlings), 
-- possess a thicker outer tissue layer (Chlorenchyme layer), in which the Mescaline content is highest.

2. PLANT / PLANT IN POT = Well-rooted Mescaline Cacti in a pot
Grow immediately at home!
Buying a rooted Mescaline Cactus saves:
repotting, rooting, deformation due to a growth stop, and possible loss due to infections and rotting.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOWN MESCALINE CACTI
1. Sown Mescaline Cacti often grow up in protected conditions for the first few years.
They are often shielded from sun, usually stand warm, are protected with pesticides.
These so-called ‘greenhouse plants’ are thinner, waterier, weaker, have thinner and lighter spines.
These ‘greenhouse plants’ are therefore more sensitive to less optimal conditions.

2. Young seedlings of Mescaline Cacti often do not resemble older plants of the same species.
Young seedlings of different species of Mescaline Cacti often resemble each other in the first few years.
So in both cases, it is not clear which species of Mescaline Cactus the seedling belongs to.

This is why we supply all Trichocereus species as thick strong cuttings and as well-rooted plants in a pot.
