 INTRODUCTION

For many, the Echinopsis lageniformis (Bolivian Torch Cactus) is an unknown Mescaline Cactus from Bolivia (South America).
Its Mescaline content is about the same as that of the San Pedro Cactus and Peruvian Torch Cactus.
Echinopsis lageniformis is the only Mescaline Cactus to contain natural MAOIs.
An MAO inhibitor inhibits the breakdown of Mescaline, and thus prolongs the effect of Mescaline !

The Echinopsis lageniformis has been used as a medicine by indigenous people (Indians) for thousands of years.
Indigenous Indians in Bolivia call Echinopsis lageniformis and Echinopsis pachanoi both Achuma / Huachuma and San Pedro.

Echinopsis lageniformis plants are rarely offered for sale.
It is the most beautiful and fastest growing mind-expanding Echinopsis species !
Echinopsis lageniformis is probably the Mescaline Cactus with the strongest effects !

ALKALOID CONTENT OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS PLANTS
Plants of Echinopsis lageniformis contain other alkaloids besides the alkaloid Mescaline.

Content of all alkaloids in Echinopsis lageniformis
Alkaloids: more than 50 milligrams per 100 grams of fresh cactus = more than 0.05 %.

Content of alkaloids by species in Echinopsis lageniformis
Mescaline content : more than 50% of the total alkaloids amount.

 3,4-dimethoxiphenethylamine : 1-10 % of total alkaloid content.

 3-methoxityramine : 1-10 % of total alkaloid content.

 Tyramine : trace amounts.

MESCALINE CONTENT OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS PLANTS
A 100-gram live un-dried Echinopsis lageniformis plant contains about 25 milligrams of Mescaline.
Or about 0.25% of the fresh live Cactus.

See the book: Trout - Trout's notes on San Pedro & related Trichocereus species .
 Echinopsis lageniformis and forms - pages 28 - 55 .
 Reported analysis - page 54

 DOSAGE OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS CACTUS
100 grams of fresh Echinopsis lageniformis (= Trichocereus bridgesii) contains about 25 milligrams of Mescaline.
For a normal trip, you need about 300 milligrams of Mescaline.
Or about 1,200 grams of fresh Echinopsis lageniformis Cactus.

 MAOIs
The Echinopsis lageniformis Cactus is the only Mescaline Cactus to contain natural MAOIs.
These are substances that prolong the effects of Mescaline, among other things!
MAO inhibitors can be dangerous, they increase blood pressure, among other things !

 USE OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS PLANTS

The columns of Echinopsis lageniformis are used by natives as:
 1. hedge or as a fence on walls.
 2. medicine.

And by users throughout the world as:
 3. psychoactive substance (entheogen) in a Mescaline trip.

DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS

Echinopsis lageniformis is a grey to light blue columnar Echinopsis Cactus.
This Cactus species grows only in Bolivia (South America).
This Cactus is easily recognised by its up to 10 cm long yellow-brown marginal spines and central spines.
The colour of the Cactus body is pale-green to grey-blue (‘light blue-green’).
See also the section: Changed Mescaline Cactus species .

 Natural growth range
Echinopsis lageniformis grows naturally in the Andes high mountains around La Paz in Bolivia (South America).
The city of La Paz lies at an altitude of 3640 metres.
The department of La Paz is at an altitude of 3000 to 6600 metres.

 Non-natural growing area
Echinopsis lageniformis is often used as a hedge and as a fence in Bolivia.

 Stem of Echinopsis lageniformis
The trunk of Echinopsis lageniformis can grow about five metres long, and up to 15 cm thick.
The trunk usually grows vertically upwards, but it can also fall over and continue growing horizontally.
The trunk and side branches (stems) are grey-green to grey-blue in colour.

 Form of Echinopsis lageniformis
The Cactus forms several stems (branches, trunks) from its base, creating a multi-stemmed shrub.

Number of ribs of Echinopsis lageniformis
Echinopsis lageniformis has four to eight ribs.
A rib is a raised protrusion of the trunk or stem, and runs parallel to the length of the trunk

 Areoles of Echinopsis lageniformis
The large areoles are about 2 cm apart.
Above each areole is a V-shaped groove, which is slightly darker in colour than the tissue next to it.
areole = oval to round surface on the ribs or nodules of a Cactus.
From this can grow wool, thorns, flowers, seed berries and new shoots.

 Thorns of Echinopsis lageniformis
Each areole has up to six yellow to brown long inflexible thorns.
The maximum length of the middle and marginal spines is about 10 centimetres.
Even a young Bolivian Torch Cactus makes all these long spines.

 Mescaline content of Echinopsis lageniformis
Contains about the same amount of Mescaline as the San Pedro Cactus and the Peruvian Torch Cactus.
But also contains natural MAO inhibitors, which prolong the action of Mescaline !

 Growth of Echinopsis lageniformis
The Bolivian Torch Cactus is the fastest growing Mescaline cactus !
A well-rooted Bolivian Torch Cactus in a large pot can grow about 30 centimetres per year.

 SCIENTIFIC DESCRIPTION OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS

Description from: The Cactaceae - Britton & Rose (Vol. 2 - page 134)
Tall, 2 to 5 metres tall, making more or fewer branches, pale green, a little with a haze.
Branches 1 to 1.5 decimetres in diameter, 4 to 8 ribs.
Ribs blunt, separated by a wide but shallow gap.
Areoles large, about 2 cm apart.
Spines 2 to 6, yellowish, needle-shaped to awl-shaped, very uneven, sometimes 10 cm long, not thickened at base.

 VERNACULAR NAMES OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS

 Bolivian Torch and San Pedro
The Bolivian Torch Cactus (Echinopsis lageniformis) and the San Pedro Cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi)
are both grown in Bolivia by the indigenous Indians:
 1. Achuma.
 2. Called Huachuma.
 3. Called San Pedro.
Apparently, they make no difference between the two botanical Mescaline Cactus species.
Both Cacti apparently have the same consciousness-expanding effects for local indigenous people !

Research results show the same Mescaline concentrations in Echinopsis lageniformis and Echinopsis pachanoi.
Positive user experiences (‘bio-assays’) also demonstrate the strong psychedelic effects of the Bolivian Torch Cactus.

Folk names of the Bolivian Torch Cactus
Folk names for the Bolivian Torch Cactus are:
achuma, aguacolla, chumarse, gigantón, huachuma, San Pedro Cactus.

 SCIENTIFIC NAMES OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS

Scientific name of Echinopsis lageniformis - intro
The official scientific name for the Bolivian Torch Cactus is now Echinopsis lageniformis
Trichocereus pachanoi was the former scientific name, which is now botanically invalid.

 Scientific name
Name: Echinopsis lageniformis (Forster) H. Friedrich & Rowley 1974 (see IOSB 3(3): 96).
 Synonym: Echinopsis lageniformis (S.-D. ) Britton & Rose 1920.
 Basioniem: Cereus bridgesii Salm-Dyck 1850.
basioniem = the literal name on which another name is based.

Distribution area : La Paz, Bolivia.

Old invalid names of Echinopsis lageniformis
 Cereus bridgesii (Salm-Dyck, 1850).
 Cereus lagenaeformis (Forster, 1861).
 Cereus bridgesii brevispinus (Schumann, 1897).
 Cereus bridgesii lageniformis (Schumann, 1897).
 Cereus bridgesii longispinus (Maass, 1905).
 Cereus lasiacanthus (Schumann, 1907).

Meaning of scientific names of Echinopsis lageniformis
 Echinopsis = hedgehog cactus
 forma = form, shape.
lageniformis = shape of a bottle.
Trichocereus = cereus (columnar cactus) with hairs.
bridgesii = named after the Englishman Bridges.
 monstruosus = unnatural, wondrous, monstrous.
 monstrosus = English = monstruosus
variety = taxonomic rank lower than a species or subspecies.
Differing in some characteristics from the type-plant of the (sub)species.

 VARIETIES OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS
There are three culture varieties described by Borg in 1976 :
 1. Echinopsis lageniformis variety brevispinus.
This variety has 7 to 8 ribs and very small spines.

 2. Echinopsis lageniformis variety longispinus.
These Cacti have 4 or 5 ribs and very long central spines.

 3. Echinopsis lageniformis variety lageniformis.
The stem is shaped like a club with 6 or 7 ribs, and many short spines.

 FORMS OF ECHINOPSIS LAGENIFORMIS

There are several forms of Echinopsis lageniformis.

 1. Echinopsis lageniformis monstrous form.
 = Echinopsis lageniformis forma monstruosus.
= Penile cactus = Frauengluck in German.
= Echinopsis lageniformis forma monstrosus (in English).
See: Achuma Cactus monstrous form .

The ribs are often missing in this monstrous form, giving the stem a completely rounded shape.
The monster-shaped body still has thorns at the bottom.
But from the middle of the Cactus body, the thorns are missing.

 2. Echinopsis lageniformis ‘Cactus of the four winds’ .
= Cactus of the four winds
= ‘Cactus of the four winds’ in English.
This rare and unusual form of the San Pedro Cactus has only four ribs.
Considered highly magical and sacred by indigenous shamans in South America.
In San Pedro ceremonies, a 4-ribbed San Pedro Cactus is attributed special supernatural powers,
because each rib points to a wind direction.

 2. Echinopsis lageniformis crest form
 = Echinopsis lageniformis forma cristatus.
= Bolivian Torch Cactus cristate or fan form.
= Achuma Cactus cristate or fan form.

 3. Echinopsis lageniformis form with closer together smaller spines.
 But also has longer spines.

 4. Echinopsis lageniformis form with fewer ribs.
This form has wide shallow depressions between the ribs.
Some spines are much longer and are less present on the Cactus.

Forms 3 and 4 are often present on the same Bolivian Torch Cactus.

 EXPLANATION OF OUR MESCALINE CACTI

 Dimensions
The dimensions listed are minimum dimensions.
So a cutting of 7+ cm means a length of at least 7 cm.

 Abbreviations
STEK = unrooted cutting (side branch cut off). In English: cutting.
 PLANT = well-rooted plant in a pot.
PLANT IN POT = well-rooted plant in a pot.

 Cuttings
Our Mescaline Cacti are offered as:

 1. Thick strong cutting without roots (cutting).
To pot up yourself, or to eat ..... !
A cutting roots after 4 to 6 weeks, after which the rooted Mescaline Cactus grows further.

Cuttings of Echinopsis (Trichocereus) Cactus species :
-- up to about 15 cm in length are much thicker, heavier and stronger than sown Mescaline Cacti (seedlings),
-- possess a thicker outer tissue layer (Chlorenchyme layer), in which the Mescaline content is highest.

 2. Well-rooted Cactus in a pot.
A rooted cactus grows immediately at home!
Buying a rooted Mescaline Cactus saves:
repotting, rooting, deformation due to a growth stop, and possible loss due to infections and rotting.

 DISADVANTAGES OF SOWN MESCALINE CACTI

1. Sown Mescaline Cacti often grow up in protected conditions for the first few years.
They are often shielded from sun, usually stand warm, are protected with pesticides.
These so-called ‘greenhouse plants’ are thinner, waterier, weaker, have thinner and lighter spines.
These ‘greenhouse plants’ are therefore more sensitive to less optimal conditions.

2. Young seedlings of Mescaline Cacti often do not resemble older plants of the same species.
Young seedlings of different species of Mescaline Cacti often resemble each other in the first few years.
So in both cases, it is not clear which species of Mescaline Cactus the seedling belongs to.

Therefore, we supply all Echinopsis (Trichocereus) species as thick strong cuttings and as well-rooted plants in a pot.
