Blue-green columnar cactus with long thorns.
These cuttings have spent the last eight (!) years neglected without a pot in full sun on the soil.
They have been unable to absorb much water with their limited roots and have dried out as a result.
These old cuttings have the most bitter taste I have tasted in Mescaline Cacti.
Mescaline tastes bitter and smells distinct.

Description
These 12-year-old cuttings were first grown up into 70 - 80 cm long and strong Peruvian Torch Cactus plants.
These tall Peruvian Torch Cactus have stood in full sun every year.
With winter temperatures down to minus 7 a minus 8 degrees Celsius.
These Peruvian Torch Cacti were cut down (!) in 2005, dried and the cuttings were put on soil without a pot.
These neglected Peruvian Torch Cacti cuttings have made thick roots, and have been watered occasionally.
Each cutting has grown only a little further due to its limited root system,
and also narrower than the stem below it.
These cuttings have been in full sun.
With winter temperatures down to minus 8 degrees Celsius, and down to minus 10 degrees Celsius in February 2012.
These cuttings have spent the last eight (!) years standing neglected without a pot in full sun on the soil.
They have not been able to absorb much water with their limited roots and have therefore dried out.
Flowering
Peruvian Torch Cacti from 30 cm long can flower provided they have had enough sun and nutrients.
Several soil-grown cuttings have therefore flowered in recent years !
Taste of the cuttings
These old cuttings have the most bitter taste we have tasted in Peruvian Torch Cacti.
Mescaline tastes bitter and smells clear.
Research
According to research:
1. older Mescaline Cacti contain proportionally more Mescaline than younger Mescaline Cacti.
2. neglected Mescaline Cacti contain relatively more Mescaline than well-tended Mescaline Cacti.

Condition of cuttings
Each cutting often has some beige coloured spots on the back.
These are discolourations of the epidermis, the tissue below is green in colour.
Cuttings have the top and bottom cut off.
So the cutting has few roots at the bottom, nor a rounded tip at the top.
These green to blue-green CUTTINGS have a thick green chlorenchyme layer under the epidermis.
This tissue layer contains relatively the most Mescaline.
Weight of the cuttings
Minimum weight: around 400 grams.
Maximum weight: about 500 grams.
Average weight: about 450 grams.
Using the cuttings
1. You can let the cutting root in cactus soil.
The cutting will make new offshoots at the top, often 2 or 3 at a time.
You can cut off these new side branches and let them root or consume them again.
Cuttings from 30 cm long can flower provided they have had enough sun and nutrients.
2. You can cut the cutting into several pieces, and let these new cuttings dry well.
You can let each dried partial cutting root separately in a pot with Cactus soil.
After which each Peruvian Torch Cactus cutting will start producing new shoots at the top.
3. Or consume.
A 30 cm cutting is probably not enough for a good Peruvian Torch Cactus trip.
Rooting a 12-year-old Peruvian Torch Cactus Cutting that already has roots.
The 12-year-old cutting has received little water and little nutrition in recent years.
It is best to let the cutting root and recover for a few months first.
So do not put the cuttings in full sun, and do not water too quickly and too much.
Potting up the 12-year-old Peruvian Torch Cactus Cutting that already has roots
Let the cutting dry for 1 week to allow any damaged roots to recover.
Fill the tall plastic pot provided with dry San Pedro Cactus soil to 1 centimetre below the top rim.
Put the long cutting about 6 - 8 centimetres deep upright in the soil.
You can also fill half the pot with dry San Pedro Cactus soil.
This will dry out the soil sooner, with less chance of the roots and Cactus rotting.
Watering the cutting
Fill the pot half full with water after 2 to 3 weeks, so that the soil is moderately moist.
Let the excess water drain away.
Repeat the watering every 2-3 weeks.
Water every 2nd time with up to 0.5 grams of Cactus fertiliser per litre in it.
Changes to the cutting
You will see that the cutting grows a little thicker and thicker.
Eventually the long cutting will grow slowly, you can see this by:
1. the light-green new growth in the top.
2. the new cuttings emerging at the top.
Recovery from neglect
After about 2 months of growing and fertilising, the 12-year-old cutting has recovered from neglect.
You can then cut from the top of the rooted cutting one or more cuttings about 10 centimetres long.
