Other names:
= Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens (botanical non scientific name).
= Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens (botanical non scientific name).

Wrong names:
Lophophora decipiens is not a valid botanical species name.

1. WHAT IS PEYOTE DECIPIENS ?

Peyote Decipiens is a popular name
Peyote Decipiens is a new vernacular name for Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens.
The Peyote Decipiens has nodules (tubercles, elevations) around each areole.
As a result, the appearance of this Cactus is spherical and knobbly.
Thus, the Peyote Decipiens does not have vertical ribs with a vertical groove between them as other Peyote plants do.

3. IS PEYOTE DECIPIENS STRONGER THAN THE COMMON PEYOTE ?

A test was recently performed on a piece of tissue from our Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens.
Our Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens turned out to be about 60% stronger (!) than other Peyote's we previously sold.
This test tested the concentration per piece of tissue.
But since the Peyote Decipiens contains nodules, the total amount of Mescaline is even higher than other Peyote's !

Larger surface area in Peyote decipiens
Because of the many small elevations, the Peyote Decipiens has a larger surface area.
And thus more epidermis under which most of the Mescaline is located.
Peyote decipiens has more green tissue than a round Peyote or a Peyote with ribs.
This green tissue directly under the epidermis contains relatively more Mescaline.

More Mescaline in Peyote decipiens
As a result, the Peyote decipiens will contain more Mescaline per gram and per diameter.
Because the larger the nodules, the larger the surface area, the more Mescaline.
However, the question is how much that is.

Because the decipiens Cactus has air between the nodules, and thus no plant tissue.
But the round Lophophora williamsii does have cellular tissue here containing plant cells with Mescaline.

4. BOTANICAL CLASSIFICATION OF PEYOTE DECIPIENS

Origin of the name Peyote Decipiens
Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens was first described by botanist Leon Croizat in 1944.
He thus described this Cactus as a variety of Lophophora williamsii (Peyote).
With its main characteristics being its knobbed appearance and longer flowers.

Peyote decipiens is a form
“Peyote decipiens” is botanically a particular form of Lophophora williamsii (Peyote).
Therefore, this Peyote decipiens is said to contain the same ingredients (contents) as the Peyote.
And therefore should also contain the mind-altering substance Mescaline.

Lophophora decipiens is not a species
Lophophora decipiens has never been validly described as a species.
Therefore, the species name “decipiens” is not legally valid.
So Lophophora decipiens is a non-valid name for a non-existent species.

Peyote Decipiens
So Peyote Decipiens is not a name for other Lophophora species such as Lophophora diffusa and Lophophora fricii.
Because both are not Peyote's but False Peyote's.
However, these False Peyote's contain little or no Mescaline.

Explanation of the names
decipiens = deceptive (Latin). The Latin word “decipiens” means deceptive.
Areole = the spots on a Cactus from which the thorns (or wool) grow, and from which the flower buds emerge.
Tubercle = elevation (outgrowth) on the plant body.

5. APPEARANCE OF LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII FORMA DECIPIENS

The tubercelled appearance is the main visible characteristic of Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens.
Another feature are the flowers that protrude further from the top than in Lophophora williamsii.

The plant body of Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens has raised tubercles (thickenings, podaria) from the base.
The areoles of this Lophophora stand on these distinct elevations.

Because of these elevations (tubercles), the tubercles appear to be diagonal (oblique) to each other.
As a result, this Cactus does not have vertical ribs with a vertical groove (floor) between them.
As most Peyote Cacti (Lophophora williamsii) do have.

1. Color drawing of Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens.
The description of Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens is based on this drawing.

6. MULTIPLE DECIPIENS FORMS IN THE GENUS LOPHOPHORA !

Four knobbed Lophophora forms !
There are at least four Lophophora species or forms with a knobbed appearance !
So these four species and forms have a decipiens-like knobbly shape on the outside.

But two of these four species are False Peyote Cacti, and contain virtually NO Mescaline !
So that you have to be careful to buy the right species !

Lophophora species with nodules on the outside:
-- Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens (or forma decipiens).
-- Lophophora williamsii forma jourdaniana (with small thorns and darker pinkish-red flowers).
-- Lophophora diffusa (= False Peyote, with indistinct ribs).
-- Lophophora fricii (= False Peyote, with darker pinkish-purple flowers, a larger body, and a rough epidermis).

Explanation of the names
decipiens = deceptive (Latin).
Areole = the spots on a Cactus from which the thorns (or wool) grow, and from which the flower buds emerge.
Tubercle = elevation (outgrowth) on the plant body.

7. CONFUSION OF PEYOTE DECIPIENS WITH OTHER PEYOTE SPECIES
Under the name Peyote Decipiens are offered the species Lophophora diffusa and Lophophora fricii.
So you can buy Peyote Decipiens Cacti that are Lophophora diffusa or Lophophora fricii.
But Lophophora diffusa or Lophophora fricii contain no or almost no Mescaline !

These two Lophophora species are called False Peyote by the Native Americans (Indians).
These False Peyote Cacti were and are therefore not harvested by Native Americans in nature.
Because they contain little or no Mescaline.

8. OFFERED PEYOTE DECIPIENS CACTI
The Peyote decipiens Cacti offered online are often not Peyote's (Lophophora williamsii).
But False Peyote's like Lophophora diffusa and Lophophora fricii !
Both False Peyote's contain no or virtually no Mescaline !
And are thus not Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens Cacti, which contain a lot of Mescaline.

Appearance of offered Peyote Decipiens Cacti
The Peyote Decipiens Cacti offered online often differ in appearance.
Sometimes there are even three different Lophophora species in the same photo of Peyote Decipiens ....

Offered under the name “Peyote Decipiens” are:

1. Genuine Peyote Cacti (Lophophora williamsii).
The true Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is dark green to blue-green to gray-blue in color.
Some offered Cacti have distinct ribs (vertical protrusions) and no tubercles.
So these are not Peyote Decipiens Cacti, because according to the description they should have nodules !
However, these Peyote Cacti should contain Mescaline.

2. Lophophora diffusa (= False Peyote Cactus)
Some offered Peyote Decipiens Cacti are light green to yellow-green in color.
So not blue-green or gray-blue like the real Peyote (Lophophora williamsii).
These Cacti are almost completely round, and have barely visible lines between the minimal elevations.
These are Lophophora diffusa Cacti, which contain virtually no Mescaline !
Lophophora diffusa is therefore considered a Fake Peyote Cactus by Native Americans (Indians).
Which you should not harvest in nature ....

3. Lophophora fricii (= False Peyote Cactus).
Some offered Peyote Decipiens Cacti are light green to yellow-green to gray-green in color.
These Peyote Decipiens Cacti have a rough epidermis, and do have (low) elevations.
However, the flowers are much darker pink than the flowers of Lophophora williamsii.
This is Lophophora fricii, a Lophophora species that also does not contain Mescaline !

Lophophora fricii is therefore considered a False Peyote Cactus by Native Americans (Indians).
Which you should not harvest in nature ....

So be careful what and where you buy !

9. OFFICIAL FIRST DESCRIPTION OF LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII VARIETY DECIPIENS

Official describer: Leon Croizat.
Publication: Desert Plant Life 16 (p. 44) from the year 1944.
Published name: Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens.

Official description of Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens by Croizat (1944).

Lophophora williamsii (Lem. ex Salm-Dyck) Coult. decipiens var. nov.

Culta pusilla ca. 5-6 cm. lata.
Costis primum ca. 1-1, subtus in tuberculis conicis solutis.
Flore roseo, in anthesi tubo elongato primo intuitu peculiari.

Typus: “Lophophora williamsii” sensu Britt. & Rose Cact: 3: pl. 10 fig. 4, 1922, excl. descr. syn. omn.

Additional comments by L. Croizat (Desert Plant Life 16 (p. 44) from the year 1944)

This is a peculiar small plant, of which I have cultivated a specimen furnished by Mr. and Mrs. F. Schmoll.
A glance at the figure cited, compared with fig. 3 on the same plate
(which iIlustrates the true L. williamsii) reveals material differences.
In both plants the flower is pink, but the body of my new variety is basaly tubercled, rather than ribbed.
Precisely in the manner shown by Britton & Rose.
The flower, moreover freely reaches out of the top of the plant, which can be seen in the type-figure, and is quite evident in life.”

Dutch translation of the first description
Grown small (insignificant) ca. 5 - 6 cm wide.
Ribs first ca. 11 , turning into knobbed cones below.
Flowers pink, during flowering first extended flower tube peculiar appearance.

Type-plant: “Lophophora williamsii” sensu Britt. & Rose Cact: 3: pl. 10 fig. 4, 1922, excl. descr. syn. omn.

English translation of the first description
Groomed tiny ca. 5-6 cm. wide.
Rib ca. 1 - 1, beneath the conical prominences paid.
Pink flower in a flower tube of a special detachment at first glance.

10. COMMENTS ON THE FIRST DESCRIPTION

The description referred to a drawing
In the description of this variety, Leon Croizat referred to a color illustration (drawing) from the book:
Britton and Rose: The Cactaceae (1922, Vol. 3, Plate X , Fig. 4).
The drawing of Plate X, Fig. 4 was made from a Lophophora plant received from France by N.L. Britton or J.N. Rose in 1901.

Drawings from Britton and Rose (The Cactaceae (1922).

1. Drawing in color of Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens
Drawing in color from the book “The Cactaceae” by Britton & Rose (1922, Vol. 3, Plate X, Figure 4).
The black and white drawing of No. 2 is based on this colored drawing.
Note the distinct gray-green to dark-green color of the Peyote in the colored drawing.
So that is not a yellow-green color like Lophophora diffusa and Lophophora fricii have.
Croizat indicates that the newly described variety decipiens resembles this colored picture.

2. Drawing in black and white of Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens
from a reprint of the book “The Cactaceae” by Britton & Rose (1922, Vol. 3 , Plate X , Fig. 4).

Explanation of the names
Podarium = thickening of the leaf base.
Tubercle = a small rounded elevation (outgrowth) on the plant body.

11. CROIZAT'S DESCRIPTION OF LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII VARIETY DECIPIENS

Summarized below are L. Croizat's data on Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens.

1. Peculiar small Cactus approximately 5 - 6 cm wide.
2. First ribs about 11, which below turn into tubercles.
3. Pink flower with an elongated floral tube.
4. Type-plant is the Lophophora pictured in the book Britt. & Rose Cact: 3: pl. 10 fig. 4, 1922.
Croizat calls this image the type-image of Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens.
The type image shows a low blue-green globular Cactus with a knobbed appearance.
5. Croizat owned a Cactus resembling the image 4 from Br. & Rose Cact: 3: pl. 10 fig. 4, 1922.
6. The flower color is pink, like the normal L. williamsii.
7. The body of the Cactus is knobbed at the base.
Exactly in the manner shown in the type image in Br. & Rose Cact: 3: pl. 10 fig. 4, 1922.
8. The flower extends above the plant, as also shown in the type image.
In real life this can be seen very clearly.

12. APPEARANCE OF LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII VARIETY DECIPIENS

The knobbed appearance is the main visible characteristic of Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens.
Another feature are the flowers that protrude further from the top than in Lophophora williamsii.

The plant body of Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens has raised tubercles (thickenings, podaria) from the base.
The areoles of this Lophophora stand on these distinct elevations.

Because of these elevations (tubercles), the tubercles appear to be diagonal (oblique) to each other.
As a result, this Cactus does not have vertical ribs with a vertical groove (floor) between them.
As most Peyote Cacti (Lophophora williamsii) do.

13. BOTANICAL STATUS OF LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII VARIETY DECIPIENS

Invalid description of Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens
Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens was only described as a variety by Croizat in 1944.
The description of the Type Cactus was based on a drawing from a 1922 book.
And thus not on a living Cactus, a specimen of which should be kept in a herbarium.
However, this description was incomplete and therefore botanically invalid.
So officially Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens is thus not a valid botanical name.

So Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens is not an official variety, but at most a form of Lophophora williamsii.

Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens
Probably Lophophora williamsii var. decipiens (Croizat) is a form of Lophophora williamsii (Peyote).
So Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens is a better name for this Cactus.
But also Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens is not recognized as a botanical name (yet).

14. BOTANICAL STATUS OF LOPHOPHORA DECIPIENS

The name Lophophora decipiens is incorrect and not described
The name Lophophora decipiens implies that this is a species of the genus Lophophora.
But Lophophora decipiens has never been validly described as a Lophophora species.

But without a valid description and without special species characteristics, you cannot simply give a Cactus the status of a species.
Therefore, Lophophora decipiens is an invalid botanical species name.
And thus should not be used !|.

Origin of the name Lophophora decipiens
Lophophora decipiens is a name that (online) stores (Smartshops) have given to certain Lophophora cacti.
Perhaps these stores mean by that Lophophora williamsii variety decipiens.
But they should say so then, and not use a wrong name.

Several Lophophora species are also offered under the name Lophophora decipiens,
including two false Peyote Cactus species with virtually no Mescaline!

15. TRIP-ADVICE: SAN PEDRO CACTUS !

1. Finer trip with a San Pedro or Peruvian Torch
A trip with the San Pedro or Peruvian Torch is much finer and more relaxing than a Peyote trip.
The San Pedro and Peruvian Torch do not contain paralyzing alkaloids, which the Peyote does.
Which makes for a much more relaxing trip than a Peyote trip.

2. Cheaper trip with a San Pedro or Peruvian Torch
San Pedro cuttings or Peruvian Torch cuttings are also much cheaper.
For a Peyote trip, you need about 300 grams of fresh Peyote to get 300 grams of Mescaline.
That's more than 10 fresh Peyote Cacti 4 cm in diameter and 3 cm high.
And more than 2 fresh Peyote Cacti 7 cm in diameter and 4 cm high.

With a San Pedro Cactus cutting, about 500 - 600 grams of fresh San Pedro Cactus is enough for a good trip.
Either about 40 cm San Pedro Cactus is enough for a good trip.
