3. WHAT IS A PEYOTE ?
Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is the name for a small round spherical Cactus with woolly hairs.
The scientific name is Lophophora williamsii (Lophophora = bristle-bearing).
The Peyote Cactus is best known for its psychoactive and mind-altering effects.
The alkaloid Mescaline in the Peyote causes hallucinatory effects during a trip.
The effects of Mescaline on a human are comparable to the effects of LSD.

Origin of the name Peyote
The popular names Peyote and Peyotl are derived from the Spanish word Peiotl (year 1560 A.D.).
Peiotl is based on a word from the Native American language Nahuatl, which was spoken by the Toltecs and Aztecs, among others.
The meaning of Peyotl may be: Holy messenger, medicinal plant, revivalist, kokon (by the white wool).
More info on Names of the Peyote.
Other Native American names: Hikuri, Peiotl, Peyotl, Pejote, Peyot, Peote, Pellote, Peyori, Pezote, Piotl

Appearance of a Peyote
The Peyote's natural shape is round (spherical) and flat (low).
The Peyote does not have thorns (spines) like other Cacti, but white hairs of wool.

The color of the Peyote is green to green-blue to gray-blue.
The Peyote blooms with a pale pink flower that grows in the top of the plant.
The Peyote has a thick taproot that is almost as thick as the above-ground head.

Older Peyote plants often produce multiple heads that together form a Peyote cluster (Peyote group).

Natural growing sites of the Peyote
Peyote plants grow in nature:
-- in northern Mexico.
-- in the south of the state of Texas (= United States = USA).

Historical uses of the Peyote
The Peyote has been used for thousands of years by the original inhabitants (Indians) of North America.
Archaeological excavations have found dried peyote butts (severed heads) from around the year 3700 BC.
The Peyote is a “sacred Cactus” for Indian tribes in Mexico and the United States (USA).

Contemporary uses of the Peyote
The Peyote is used today in the United States primarily by members of the Native American Church (NAC).
These members have exclusive rights to purchase and use the Peyote Cacti.

Native American tribes in Mexico (including the Huichol) also use the Peyote in religious rituals.
The Peyote is an important religious sacrament for the indigenous people.

sacrament = sacred act in many religions to make contact with god.

Harvesting the Peyote
Peyote Cacti are harvested in nature by cutting them horizontally with a knife.
This leaves a piece of the long root of the Peyote in the ground.
New shoots can grow from this later.

The cut Peyote heads are often first dried after harvesting so that they can be kept longer.

Peyote buttons
The severed heads of Peyote plants are called Peyote buttons.

button = knot in English, because the severed head of a Peyote resembles a flat round button.

Preparation of the Peyote
The Peyote buttons are boiled in water to make a kind of Peyote tea.
The dried heads (buttons) are also chewed.

Psychoactive effects of the Peyote
The Peyote is the Mescaline Cactus with the strongest mind-altering effects.
In a Peyote trip, the component Mescaline causes strong psychedelic hallucinations.
The Peyote contains more than 55 different types of alkaloids.
Each alkaloid has its own effect on the human body.

Alkaloid = usually basic reactive substance with a nitrogen group.
Alkaloids are mainly found in plants.
They have a strong effect on the central nervous system of humans and animals.

Mescaline = 3,4,5-trimethoxy-Beta-phenethylamine = 3,4,5-trimethoxy-B-phenethylamine.
3,4,5-trimethoxy-Beta-phenethylamine = 3,4,5-trimethoxy-B-phenethylamine.
3,4,5-trimethoxy-B-phenyl-ethylamine = 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine.
3,4,5-trimethoxy-B-phenyl-ethylamine = 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine.

5. PEYOTE FORMS (LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII FORMS).
The scientific name of the Peyote Cactus is Lophophora williamsii.
Some forms of the species Lophophora williamsii have been described.
These forms are not real species but accidental natural divergent forms.
Which may therefore also be called Peyote if they produce a psychoactive effect.

Properties of the Peyote forms
These forms probably have the same properties as the Peyote (Lophophora williamsii).
And probably contain relatively high amounts of Mescaline as well as many other alkaloids.
They are blue-green to gray-blue in color when exposed to a lot of sun !

Peyote forms (probably containing a lot of Mescaline)
1. Lophophora williamsii forma caespitosa = a sprouting form with several heads around the central head.
All heads together form a cluster.
This form also makes side shoots already as a small young plant !
2. Lophophora williamsii forma decipiens = a form of the Peyote with tubercles (elevations) around the areoles.
Thus, they do not have vertical ribs.
3. Lophophora williamsii forma pentagona = a Peyote form with five vertical ribs.
4. Lophophora williamsii forma pluricostata = a Peyote form with many ribs (13 ribs).
5. Lophophora williamsii forma texana (var. texensis) = a Peyote form native to Texas (USA).

Meaning of the names of the Peyote forms
caespitosa = forming sods (cluster, groups).
Lophophora williamsii var. caespitosa makes multiple heads and forms a cluster with many Cactus bulbs.
decipiens = deceptive.
williamsii = named after the Englishman C.H. Williams.
pentagona = pentagonal (with five corners).
pluricostata = many-ribbed.
texensa = native to Texas (USA).
texensis = native to Texas (USA).

7. PEYOTE VARIETIES (LOPHOPHORA WILLIAMSII VARIETIES).
The scientific name of the Peyote is Lophophora williamsii.
A few varieties of Lophophora williamsii have been described.
These varieties are not real Cactus species but accidental natural deviating Peyote Cacti.
Which may therefore also be called Peyote if they produce a psychoactive effect.

Properties of the Peyote varieties
These varieties probably have the same properties as Lophophora williamsii.
And probably contain relatively high levels of Mescaline as well as many other alkaloids.
They are blue-green to gray-blue in color when exposed to a lot of sun !

Peyote varieties (maybe less Mescaline containing)
1. Lophophora williamsii variety jourdaniana
This Cactus has small thorns, often many heads and beautiful purple-red flowers !
The jourdaniana may be a cross with a Gymnocactus species with purple-pink flowers.
Its Mescaline content is not known.

Meaning of the names of the Peyote varieties
jourdaniana = named after Jourdan.

10. PEYOTE CACTI IN THE NATURE OF TEXAS

1. THREAT TO NATURAL POPULATIONS IN TEXAS (USA)

Many natural populations of Peyote in Texas (USA) are threatened by overharvesting of the plants.

1.1 Peyoteros harvest millions of Peyote buttons annually
From the beginning of the 18th century, Peyote Cacti have been collected in Texas (USA, USA).
The collectors (“Peyoteros”) harvest millions of Peyote Cacti annually in the wilds of Texas.
The flat tops (heads) of the Peyote plants are cut off and taken away.
Such a flat cut off top of a Peyote Cactus is called Peyote button.
Because the shape of a cut Peyote resembles a button.

The collected Peyote heads (Peyote buttons) are first dried.
And later sold as Peyote buttons to members of the Native American Church (NAC).

Meaning of words
Button = the English name for button.
Peyotero = registered Peyote collector in Texas (USA).
There are still some Peyoteros working in Texas.
Peyoteros = plural of Peyotero.
Peyote button = cut off top of a Peyote Cactus.
Peyote buttons are often dried to eat later during a Peyote Ceremony.

1.2 Fewer and fewer large Peyote plants in many Peyote populations
Due to the annual cutting off of millions of Peyote heads, Peyote plants do not get enough time to make new heads.
In recent years, fewer and fewer large Peyote plants can be found by the Peyoteros.
Many small Peyote buds can be found, but they are hardly interesting to harvest.
Consequently, the number of Peyoteros has greatly diminished; there are only three Peyoteros left in South Texas.
These days it is more lucrative to tour the Peyote's natural habitat (biotope).

1.3 Many large Peyote plants in private areas
Peyoteros are not allowed on private land by large landowners in South Texas.
Fortunately, many large Peyote plants still grow in these often fenced private natural areas.

The Peyoteros try to obtain these large Peyote plants by making agreements with the large landowners.
And also by petitioning the government to change the laws to allow them to collect on Private land.
Because members of the Native American Church (NAC) have the right to eat Peyote.
And probably members of “The Peyote Way Church of God” (Peyote church) too.
, Even if growing in someone else's “garden” .....

11. SHAPE AND GROWTH OF THE PEYOTE

1. THE NATURAL SHAPE AND GROWTH OF THE PEYOTE

1. The natural shape of the Peyote is flat and low !
Peyote plants in nature have a flat low shape.
The height of a Peyote is about one-third the diameter of the Cactus body.
In nature, the Peyote endures much harsher conditions than in a living room or greenhouse.
The white wool of the wool flakes is dusty and stuck together on Peyote plants in nature. .

Grown Peyote plants in Holland or Belgium look different from naturally grown Lophophora plants.
If they are grown with little fertilizer, they also remain low like Peyote plants in nature.
And from a young age, they have a blue-green to gray-blue color, and lots of white wool whose loose hairs stand out wide.
The white wool can remain white if no water is poured over it.

2. The natural Peyote color is gray-blue !
Natural Peyote plants are usually gray-blue in color.
Cultivated Peyote plants can also be a gray-blue color.

3. Overview of the Natural Form and Natural Growth of the Peyote
Naturally grown Peyote plants have:
1. a flat shape, the height is 1/3 of the diameter.
2. a gray-blue color.
3. lots of white wool, also on the underside.
4. flowers from 3 cm in diameter.
5. less water in their tissues, and hardly shrivel during a drought period (heat wave, winter dormancy).
6. less trouble from pests.
7. a lower freezing point, and thus are less susceptible to cold and frostbite.
8. a thicker epidermis.
9. a better resistance to heat.

2. UNNATURAL SHAPE AND UNNATURAL GROWTH OF THE PEYOTE.

4. An unnatural fattened Peyote plant is bullet round, too tall and shiny green !
A fast-grown Peyote raised with lots of manure and water will have a round, bulbous to bullet-round shape.
Such a fattened shiny green Peyote is as high as it is wide, sometimes the height is even greater than the diameter !
Mostly also missing are the white woolly hairs (wool-flakes), which only start growing when the Peyote plant is even bigger.
A fattened Peyote grows much narrower with less light.
Sometimes even a and columnar Cactus with sharp point at the top is formed.

The tissue of such a convex unnaturally grown Peyote contains relatively much water.
This makes the Peyote plant much less strong.
Bulging Peyote plants are much more susceptible to pests, moisture, heat and cold, tearing open due to too much water !
So of inferior quality.

5. An unnatural color of the Peyote is shiny green !
Peyote plants raised with a lot of manure have a shiny green appearance.
The much water in the Peyote plant reflects the sunlight so you see a shiny exterior.

6. Overview of the Unnatural Form and Unnatural Growth of the Peyote
Peyote with an unnatural shape has:
1. a convex shape or columnar shape, the height is about equal to the diameter.
2. a glossy-green color (the water reflects the light).
3. less white wool, and no wool on the underside.
4. flowers only from 4-5 cm diameter.
5. more water and shrinks strongly (deep furrows) in a drought period (winter dormancy in winter) or warm period (in summer).
6. more affected by pests, and is probably raised with pesticides.
7. a higher freezing point, and thus is more sensitive to cold.
8. poorer resistance to heat.

12. HISTORY OF THE PEYOTE

1. ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES OF PEYOTE BUTTONS
Peyote buttons (= dried Peyote heads) have been found in archaeological excavations in the state of Texas (USA) and in Mexico.
The oldest Peyote buttons come from around the year 3700 BC (B.C.).
It is likely that the Peyote was also known to local people before that time.

2. PEYOTE RELIGION IN MEXICO

2.1 Huichol pilgrimage: the annual trip to Wirikuta
The Huichol Indians make an annual sacred pilgrimage to the natural growing areas of the Peyote.
They travel to “Wirikuta” in the mountains of central Mexico to collect Peyote heads.
“Wirikuta” is a sacred site where the ancestors of the Huichol Indians used to live.
Wirikuta is located near the town of Real de Catorce in the state of San Luis Potosí (SLP).

Here they hunt for the Peyote plants to harvest the Peyote heads for later use.
This pilgrimage and celebration upon returning to the tribe are an annual religious highlight for the Huichol Indians.
The pilgrimage is a tradition that has probably been around for many centuries (starting in the 15th or 16th century).

Harvesting the Peyote heads
At the site in Wirikuta, the head (flat top) of the sacred Peyote plants are cut off.
But often a long piece of the Peyote's root is also cut off.
As a result, the remaining root in the soil of the Peyote is short.
The question is whether that root can make new heads later.
If it cannot, the Peyote plant dies.

See also a video about the use of the Peyote by the Huichol Indians.
Starting at minute 32:58, Peyote heads with a large piece of root attached are cut off and harvested.
See: Pilgern für Peyote - Magischer Trip durch Mexiko

Worship ceremony for the Peyote
During the harvest of the Peyote butts, a ceremony is held to worship the Peyote.
In this ritual, offerings are laid down in front of the harvested Peyote heads.
There is also singing to the Peyote.
.
Drying the Peyote heads
The harvested heads (buttons) are later dried.
Then they are eaten, or used to make tea from them.

Religious Peyote Ceremony
The dried Peyote buds (Peyote buttons) are used as medicine in religious ceremonies.
This sacred ritual is often held to heal a tribal member.
A Native American shaman (shaman) leads such a ritual nighttime Peyote meeting.
Participants consume several Peyote buttons (buds) in such a Peyote session.

Participants in such a Peyote Ceremony see visions, receiving insights in the process.
The shamans of the Huichol can communicate with their ancestors and with their Gods.

Book about the culture of the Huichol Indians.
See the book: Myerhoff: Peyote Hunt
(German translation: Myerhof: - Der Peyote Kult (1980).
This is an important book about the Huichol culture and their annual hunt for the Peyote Cactus.

3. PEYOTE CHURCH IN THE USA: NATIVE AMERICAN CHURCH
The Native American Church (N.A.C.) is a religious church in the United States of America.
This church is based on the former inhabitants (Native Americans) of the United States.
The Native American Church practices the Peyote religion (“Peyotism”),
They use the Peyote in their rituals and ceremonies.
Only members of the NAC have the legal right to use, consume and cultivate the Peyote Cactus.

4. THE PEYOTE WAY CHURCH OF GOD (Southeastern Arizona, USA)
The Peyote Way Church of God is a Peyote organization that promotes the Peyote to achieve a better spiritual life.

13. THE CHEMISTRY OF PEYOTE

1. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE PEYOTE

1. Alkaloids in the Peyote (Lophophora williamsii).
The Peyote contains more than 55 different types of alkaloids and active substances, including Mescaline.
The Peyote contains the most alkaloids of any Cactus, and also the most Mescaline !
Most alkaloids in the Peyote are also found in other Cacti.
Some alkaloids in the Peyote are unique to the Peyote (Lophophora williamsii).

2. Classification of the alkaloids in the Peyote
The alkaloids present in the Peyote can be classified into:
-- phenylethylamines (also called: phenylethylamines).
-- isoquinolines.

3. Effects of the alkaloids in the Peyote
The constituent Mescaline causes hallucinations and other psychedelic effects.
Other alkaloids work muscle-cramping, or make drowsy.
These other constituents cause additional effects and experiences during a Peyote trip.

Therefore, a trip with a Peyote (“Peyote trip”) differs markedly from a Mescaline trip.

2. MESCALINE IN PEYOTE

4. Chemical name of Mescaline
The chemical name of Mescaline is:
3,4,5-trimethoxy-B-phenethylamine (= 3,4,5-trimethoxy-beta-phenylethylamine).

5. Mescaline content of the Peyote (Lophophora williamsii).
The Mescaline content of a Peyote is about 1% of its dry weight.
This is slightly more than the Mescaline content of the San Pedro (0.067% of fresh weight).

6. Differences in the Mescaline concentration in Peyote Cacti.
The Mescaline concentration in different Peyote Cacti can vary.

Causes of these differences in the concentration of Mescaline are :
1. Condition of the Peyote
Dehydrated, recently had sufficient water.
2. Age of the Peyote
The older the plant, the higher the concentration of Mescaline.
3. Growing conditions of the Peyote
Amount and type of fertilizer and nutrients, temperature, light, water.
4. Fresh Peyote or dried Peyote?
A completely dried Peyote contains about 10 times more substances per gram than a fresh Peyote.
Plants and Peyote Cacti contain 90% water.

7. Studies on Mescaline Concentration in Peyote Cacti.
Research has shown that:
1. Mescaline levels increase with the age of the Peyote.
See the books:
1.1 Anderson: Peyote, The Divine Cactus.
2. The Mescaline is mainly in the outer tissue.
See: Trout: Trout's Notes on San Pedro & Related Trichocereus Species (pp. 270, 271).
3. The Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) contains relatively high levels of Mescaline.
All varieties and forms of Lophophora williamsii probably contain the same concentration of Mescaline.
The yellow-green colored Lophophora species (L. diffusa, L. fricii) contain (almost) no Mescaline.

8. Differences in research results.
1. Unfamiliarity with the Peyote
Many people and researchers are little familiar with Peyote Cacti,
Especially in the past, other types of Cacti were probably used and researched.
Those other Cacti probably do not contain Mescaline.
Lophophora williamsii and Lophophora diffusa are still confused with each other, see also the 1st paragraph above in this text block.

2. Different methods of analysis.
Researchers have used various chemical methods to isolate Mescaline from the Peyote.
Many of these methods do not hold up at all, or at all.

3. MESCALINE

9. Effects of Mescaline
During a Peyote trip, the psychoactive compound Mescaline causes the mind-altering effects.
The experiences during a Peyote trip are more intense and stronger than during a trip with the chemical substance Mescaline.
During a Peyote trip, many other non-psychoactive alkaloids have their own effects or side effects in addition to Mescaline.

10. The alkaloid Mescaline
Mescaline has a very bitter taste and consists of white crystals.
Its chemical name is: 3,4,5-trimethoxy-beta-phenethylamine.
An older chemical name is: 3,4,5-trimethoxy-beta-phenylethylamine.
The alkaloid Mescaline occurs in nature almost exclusively in Cacti.
alkaloid = alkaline-reactive compound.

11. Mind-altering effects of Mescaline.
Mescaline is a hallucinogenic alkaloid that causes mainly visual psychedelic hallucinations in a Mescaline trip.

12. Effects of Mescaline.
Mescaline causes physical effects when ingested, and also has mental effects.
See the Mescaline section (bottom left).

14. THE PEYOTE AND THE LAW

Is the Peyote a drug cactus ?
The Peyote belongs to the drug cacti because the Peyote has hallucinogenic effects.
The Peyote contains the psychoactive alkaloid Mescaline.
There is a relatively high amount of Mescaline in the Peyote.

The Dutch Opium Act and the Peyote
The Peyote is not on list 1 or list 2 of the Dutch Opium Act.
This means that Peyote can be freely grown, traded and transported in the Netherlands.
The government apparently does not view Drug Cacti as dangerous.

Mescaline and the Dutch Opium Act
Peyote does contain Mescaline, which as a substance is mentioned in the Opium Act.
Mescaline as a substance is not allowed to be grown, traded or transported.

15. PEYOTE TRIP

Peyote Trip
During a Peyote trip, the psychoactive compound Mescaline causes the hallucinogenic effects.
The experiences during a Peyote trip are more intense and stronger than during a trip with only Mescaline (Mescaline trip).
During a Peyote trip, in addition to Mescaline, many other non-psychoactive alkaloids have their own effects.
The Peyote tastes very bitter, because the alkaloid Mescaline has a bitter taste !
Some users vomit after eating a Peyote.

16. CACTUS GENUS LOPHOPHORA
The Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) belongs to the Cactus genus Lophophora.
This genus Lophophora consists of several species of globular Cacti.
They are all round, small, thornless, hairy, and have a tuberous root (taproot).

Lophophora species all have white woolly hairs on the areoles.
Those tufts of hairs look like bristles.
Hence the genus name Lophophora, which means “brush-bearing.”

Lophophora species
1. Lophophora williamsii = Peyote, has a round shape, a green to green-blue to gray-blue color.
2. Lophophora diffusa = False Peyote, has a round shape, indistinct (“diffuse”) ribs, and a lighter yellow-green color.
3. Lophophora fricii = False Peyote, has a gray-green color, and purple-pink flowers.
4. Lophophora koehresii = False Peyote, the smallest Lophophora species, also described as a variety of Lophophora diffusa.

The Lophophora diffusa, Lophophora fricii, and Lophophora koehresii are yellow-green in color.
All three are False Peyote Cacti that contain virtually no Mescaline !

Meaning of the botanical genus name Lophophora
The botanical genus name Lophophora means “brush bearing” .
This refers to the white bundles of wool flakes found on the areoles of Lophophora plants.
This wool protects the larger growing flower buds of the Peyote, and later the developing seed berries.

18. FALSE PEYOTE
False Peyote = False Peyote in English.

The original inhabitants of North America (“Native Americans”) called Cacti without mind-altering effects “False Peyote”.
Thus, these False Peyote Cacti did not contain a usable amount of Mescaline.
The Huichol Indians, on their annual hunt for Peyote Cacti, did not want to collect the wrong Cacti.
With the name “False Peyote” they could inform each other not to collect the wrong Cacti !

More info on False Peyote Cacti.

19. PLANTS WITH WHICH THE PEYOTE IS CONFUSED

In this list are plants (no Cacti) with which the Peyote is confused.
Mostly a name belonging to the Peyote is used for a plant or drink of another plant.

20. GROWING PEYOTE CACTI
Peyote Cacti are easy to grow and care for.
The conditions for proper growth and flowering are often easy to achieve.

Important components for successful care are:
1. the soil (soil) in which the Peyote plant grows.
2. The place where the Peyote Cactus grows (light, temperature, humidity, wind, CO2 levels).
3. The care of the Peyote plant (watering, fertilizing and feeding).

21. PROPAGATION OF PEYOTE CACTI
Peyote Cacti are easy to propagate and to care for..
You can propagate Peyote Cacti by:
-- making cuttings from a sprouting Peyote plant, and letting it root.
-- grafting a cutting from a Peyote plant onto another Cactus.

22. QUALITY OF PEYOTE CACTI
There are great differences in quality of cultivated Peyote Cacti.
Differences in quality arise from certain conditions during cultivation.
Watering, fertilization, light, temperature, air and soil determine the quality of cultivated Peyote Cacti.
More info on the Quality of Peyote Cacti can be found at the bottom of this page.

23. BUY PEYOTE CACTI

1. Peyote cacti can not be found in a garden center
The Peyote Cactus can rarely be found in a garden center.
Do not buy a fake Peyote (Lophophora diffusa) instead of the real Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) !
Lophophora diffusa is a round, convex yellow-green colored Cactus, and has round ribs that do not protrude.
Lophophora diffusa hardly contains any Mescaline !
See the section on Lophophora diffusa.

2. Buying Peyote Cactus on the internet
The rounder, taller and shinier the Peyote Cactus, the more water and fertilizer it has had during its growth.
Woolflakes are often missing from small Peyote Cacti up to about 4 inches in diameter.

These quickly grown Peyote's are more susceptible to pests and poorer conditions.
And were probably raised using insecticides (pesticides, poisons).
Some insecticides ( “systemic poisons” ) remain in the Peyote Cactus for years.
